A remarkable patented technology exists which has potential to raise premium-grade ahi and bluefin tuna in a controlled and predictable manner.
A variety of innovative aqua technology platforms are currently available, but perhaps none with more potential than a gigantic highly-automated, ocean-based aquaculture platform that is capable of grow-rates exceeding 1,000 tons of premium-grade tuna from eggs to harvest size at an ocean depth of 1,300 feet. The patented technology includes an automatic feeding system, water quality sensors, and thrusters that keep the sphere stationary, as well a sophisticated communications and security features to manage harvest.
Unfortunately, the project stalled after fighting numerous legal and regulatory battles in Hawaii since its inception. Nevertheless, the opportunity for the technology remains if the right venue and regulatory environment are found. After all, the estimated end value (the total amount paid by the final consumer) of premium tuna on the global market exceeds $41.6 billion. The deep ocean is the only place left to produce enough seafood naturally to feed the world efficiently, economically and with minimal environmental impact.
